coffinnailracing: Great idea. But, for me that would not be the right color to go with the rest of the car. Gold coins might be cool. Right now I'm leaning towards a purple tint up top and clear tape across the bottom. We'll see if anyone else chimes in and/or what else I come up with.

So, car was masked again. This time I sprayed a purple tint. Let me just say this: If you like Gene Winfield's custom fade paint jobs then this look is easy to accomplish here. If not, It is difficult to spray these "pontoon cars" with a spray can. Getting the paint even in the tunnel is difficult to say the least. When the color is transparent. it is apparent that the coat is going on thicker in some areas then in others. The more you fight it. The darker your paint job gets. Most of this will not be visible after next phase.

VK: Fortunately these cars aren't very big. I wonder if Joe has a song or video about it.
On this car getting the tape down well enough to prevent bleed is proving difficult. Too little pressure and you can visibly see that it is not sealed. Too much pressure and the balsa creases.

I will give it a light coat of clear... This helps to prevent paint from crawling under the edges of the masking tape.

Another nugget!
Do you then wait for that clear to dry? cure? or flash dry and go to color?

I still like painting straight from the can because it is hassle free...
But the real way to go is to use a HVLP spray gun.
The finish is perfect with much less chance of overspray.

I wait for the clear to dry...
Then I go over it with whatever color I am using...
When using spray paint I use Krylon brand exclusively.
It only takes about 10 minutes to dry. Never had an issue with Krylon... had a few serious catastrophes using other brands though.

So, by now it is easy to see that this paint scheme is not for everyone. It is multi-mask, multi-stage, and multi-patience heavy. Hopefully it is not too heavy to be competitive. Just about ready for clear.

For those that are wondering what happened to this build. It has been shelved. Not for an extended period of time. But, I'm waiting for paint to cure.
Clear coat coming soon.
And, since I didn't get any other suggestions I searched out and found a sticker or maybe a few that I think will add to the look/theme and cover the two windows. If it fits I think it will be super cool. If it doesn't It will likely be clear tape top and bottom.
Also, note that this car looks dramatically different in the sun then not. The transparent pink and purple are just that in the sun. Inside they appear much darker. The pink metallic is way more purple then pink. And, the purple metallic is more blue than purple. I did a really cool fade from the front of the car to the top of the front fenders and behind the front wheels. I may play a little more depending on sticker(s) and clear. But, I think all in all it is close to being completed as Plan B was envisioned.
Also, if my masking looks off, it is because of the difference in the two sides. I made sure the back was square and did all my measurements from there. The DRFW inner liner coming into the center of the car changes the spacing slightly. But, I actually think it looks better this way.

If you dont have clear, you can hit the tape line with a shot of the color that is supposed to be underneath the tape.

Im pretty sure I mentioned fogging on a little color (clear works too) and letting it dry to seal the tape edges before laying down coats of color in my video

coffinnailracing: In the video you fogged on the color you were adding. I believe theguys are suggesting similar tape sealing. One with clear. The other with the color you had masked off.
Same idea just different ways to get it done. All should work.

Eagle, are you planning to close out the rest of the back side of the wheels?
