I ordered a set of ultralight BSA 1.5 wheels from MV and I am not at all happy with them. They feel unbalanced and vibrate quite a bit when spin testing them on stainless steel axles.
I purchased a 2.4 gram set last year from MV and they are super smooth in comparison.
I’m seriously considering sending them back and I’m looking for advice on alternatives for a serious ultra light wheel that actually runs well.
Who should I go to for the best wheels?
On a side note I see that the package indicates that the wheels are cut by Derby Worx.
Disappointed to say the least, and with my race coming up soon, I need to reorder quickly.

You should contact Joel directly I'm sure he will do the right thing. Did you inspect them to see if anything is in the bores or how th bores. Did you test runout? He wheels that Joel cuts are good and shipping is very fast.

The packaging says wheels machined by Derby Worx, so I don’t think he had any hand in cutting these down.

I've used several sets of MV wheels cut by Derby Works, most of them are really nice. Don't expect a lighter wheel to spin as smooth as a heavier wheel, because it won't, due to having less rotational inertia. Check the run-out if you can, I've never had a MV/DW wheel run over .001. You can also check the bore sizes, some of the older MV/DW wheels I've received have larger bores, running at .098 or so, but I've never had a MV/DW wheel that didn't run well.

I have -0- experience cutting wheels so these are genuine questions. I know derbyworx gets bashed and some products are junk, but I'm pretty sure I read the wheels are cut on a cnc lathe. If they set up the lathe or lathes well the first time w little runout shouldn't the process be repeatable. Than they would only worry about their cutters being sharp and meeting weight requirements if the wheel started heavy or light. Now if they are using a chuck and inserting a pin each time than nothing is repeatable. What else am I missing?

I would expect a lighter wheel to be more susceptible to wobbling than a heavier one.
Also, the dynamics of a wheel spinning on a weighted car vs. just on an axle are diferent.

I've found their wheels to be very clean and and accurate, bores are usually good, with run-out around .001 or so. I've never had a "bad" one, although like everything else, some are slightly better than others. From my experience their wheels run slightly lighter than they advertise, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. I actually prefer the 1.6g MV Ultralight wheel, over the 1.5g DW Pro inertia wheel, even though DW cuts both of them. www.derbyworx.com/products/wheels/pro-inertia-lite/

I don't know if you have BSA or MV wheels. I also don't know how you are checking them.
I do know that MV is not, nor will it ever be the same. So, you will not be able to compare last year to any year in the future.
There are plenty of places you can buy light weight wheels. You can likely get better cuts than the DerbyWorx. A lot depends on the love and quality control that goes into them. I do not believe any of them will come cheap.
If you have checked them the way others have recommended and they are off then I highly recommend you contact Joel and express your displeasure. I am curious what he will say and or do to resolve.
If on the other hand they check out, I suggest you prep them and let us know how they run. If you run them across glass and the thump make a video. The PWD whisperer is quick to hear bad wheels at his facility. I doubt he will want to run MV after spending top $ to take it over.
PS I am curious if the wheels are new or old style. Most if not all of the Pro Inertia Light BSA wheels have been cut from old wheels. They have more material to machine. But, the best of those wheels are long gone. And, the bores are not the same as the newer wheels.

And, the bores are not the same as the newer wheels. The Ultralight wheels MV sells are regular USA BSA wheels, they are machined by Derby Worx for MV, I don't think anything will change there. The 1.6g Ultralight wheel MV sells is a great wheel, Derby Worx also makes the 1.5g Pro inertia lite wheel under their name. IMO the MV 1.6g Ultralight wheel is a better wheel than the 1.5g Derby Worx Pro inertia wheel.

Can anyone tell me if Derby Evolution and Max Velocity are owned by the same company? I was planning to order some different wheels from DE, but the owner of MV said that was their site as well.

Both are owned (now) by Joel Redfearn. He also owns/controls NPWDRL.

Both are owned (now) by Joel Redfearn. He also owns/controls NPWDRL. Thanks Eagle, maybe I’ll order from Jewkes. Are the derby evolution wheels cut in house or are they machined by derby Worx as well? I may have pissed off Joel, but when I’m paying for good wheels, I expect them to, well, be good.

Jewkes makes the best wheels in the business, hands down.

You will not be disappointed with Jewkes. As I mentioned to you somewhere earlier, if you are going to spend the money Jewkes id the place to go.
Don't worry about pissing off Joel. HE banned me without cause. He said he wouldn't sell to me anymore. As a result, guys reached out to me with real info and where they get their stuff. I knew Joel was going to buy MV before it was announced. I bought what I could afford before the sale happened.
As a result of Joel's strange move, my cars are faster than they have ever been!
There will be another surprise announcement soon.

Just watched the video of you spinning the wheels. Was there damage to the outer hub? Maybe it was lighting, but it looked that way on my tiny phone screen.
