Alphonso Great post , very informative ! I would disagree with the notion that the Illuminati are never racing. They're just not racing in the same venues you are. They are racing in basements, Scout Packs, Districts, Councils, NYC Worlds, and various events throughout the country.

We're going to spread our wings this year and enter a Scout car at MA....It will be a blast to see our car on the live feed, and go against some of the fastest Scout cars in the country. Hoping for a respectable finish, but may get our asses handed to us in a big way....it will be a heck of a lot of fun either way !

My son will be racing his ‘Butter’ car in the open Scout JR Webelos Graphite Division.

Probably going to do oil, although I think graphite would level the in-person advantage more.

Since you said we can ask questions...
Why PLA over something lighter/more stiff like ABS or HIPS? What does the raw bottom section weigh off the printer before processing?
Is the accuracy of the printed axle holes decent especially at the angle? (Based on your race times I'd think they are good but are some prints bad and you need multiple attempts?)
Is .02 the lowest resolution you can go, or you chose it due to the weight/layer strength?
I'm curious about what type of printer you use? What slicer?
For rigidity, like an airplane, you can probably include a truss structure inside as you aren't limited by what tools you can use to carve it out. But the tradeoff is some weight.

Sure thing DVG, I'd be glad to answer your questions. Why PLA over something lighter/more stiff like ABS or HIPS? What does the raw bottom section weigh off the printer before processing? Because that is the only material that my larger 3D Printer can print. My smaller printer can print ABS but the bed size is smaller than a PWD car.
The weight of the raw bottom off the printer is 6.5 gramsIs the accuracy of the printed axle holes decent especially at the angle? (Based on your race times I'd think they are good but are some prints bad and you need multiple attempts?) The accuracy of the canted angle is dead on. I don't need to make multiple attempts. The prints are consistent and the same every time.Is .02 the lowest resolution you can go, or you chose it due to the weight/layer strength? Yes .02" is the lowest resolution that I can go.I'm curious about what type of printer you use? What slicer? It's a MakerBot Replicator 2. I use the MakerBot Desktop software for slicing. For rigidity, like an airplane, you can probably include a truss structure inside as you aren't limited by what tools you can use to carve it out. But the tradeoff is some weight. Yeah the reason that I didn't end up with a ladder truss is because the body was then too heavy.
Best, Alphonso

Marciano Racing, Don’t kid yourself. The Pinewood Illuminati is deeply embedded in every facet of the hobby.

Alphonso, I just can't get over the fact that you can print axle holes that accurately. Did that take a bunch of testing to figure out exactly how to do it? I figured you would have to true them up with a jig to run as fast as you run. That is amazing. To me, it's the most impressive thing about your car.

Yeah the axle holes took months to get right!

Thanks, good information there. Been playing around printing bodies & x-fenders with my printer, but nothing I would consider racing yet (Though we did race self-printed x fenders in scouts this year)
