Good info! It makes one realize that there really isn't much markup on those things. I used to grumble about paying over $3 for a tiny nail, figuring it cost vendors about 25 cents. I suspect that a lot might have to do with economy of scale. Let's face it: Pinewood Derby is small. What sort of runs get you axles for $2.10/each? And what size would you need to drop to half of that?

Wanna hear something really nuts VK? I am actually contemplating the purchase of this tiny piece of carbide steel. link
Sorry about the link... It is to a 1/2" carbide steel endmill with O fluting, single straight flute...for acrylic... and it costs $175 and is the size of a roll of lifesavers.

Impressive. I gave up using Dremels. This Brownell fixture and a metal hacksaw take me less than 15 seconds to put a perfect Khouse in. Mine came and worked perfectly. Easy to use, literally takes all the guess work out. 5 secs may be a slight exaggeration but close, hardest part for me was finding the Allen wrench I just set down on the bench. Are you using a hack saw or have you purchased the screw slot files seen in the suggested when I ordered?

It will dull faster and have to be replaced sooner than the slot file but it's far cheaper. Use solid pressure and long, even stokes. Much faster than short, brisk strokes.
