Them: Had the evening off, so I built three new cars for next week's race.
Me: Managed to cut K-House slots in my axles before the baby woke from the sound of my hacksaw through the walls. Guess my evening's done.

Ya know what VK?
The name of this thread sucks...
I dunno if someone said that to you... but I am ready to take action as a result!
No promises... but I am going to speak with the others about bringing you into the loving embrace of the Pinewood Illuminati.
Again... no promises.

No promises... but I am going to speak with the others about bringing you into the loving embrace of the Pinewood Illuminati. Again... no promises. Haha, nobody said anything to me. Not recently, anyhow. Gotta get muh Box Stock rebuilt since Bulldog and Chips wanna play at the next MNOP. And gotta throw together a BASX to send to Greg. So here's how I cut a K-House (maybe I can take pics later). My goals are: Cheap, repeatable and a flat cut that fits a standard mini-screwdriver snugly. Tools required: Metal file. Vise (or Axle press and clamp). Mini Hacksaw (Harbor Freight or Menards will hook you up). Sharpie. 1) Mark the cut line with a sharpie. This is especially helpful if you want the groove to line up with a particular axis on the axle. E.g. the wide end on a BSA nail. 2) Clamp the axle into a vise. My bench vise has a little cut out section for clamping a thin rod-shaped piece, but you can also use something like a Derbyworx axle press with a clamp to hold it tight. 3) Take a standard metal file and use the edge to score an initial groove into the top of the axle, following the sharpie line you drew. 4) Take the mini-hacksaw, cut into the groove you scored until the K-House slot is your desired depth. And, if you have my life... 5) Get up to go rock the baby back to sleep, since the squeaking of the hacksaw traveled right through the thin walls.

I can't see the video, but if this is your "hold axle in one hand, hold dremel in other" method, then nooooo thanks. I injure myself without trying more than enough, thank you muchly!

Don't you have an "axle straightening tool"? All the scout dads buy one.
I put my axle into it, and then use the seam separating the halves as a sightline for the Dremel. Easy peasey.
Then I can pull the axle out to the "bend it here" mark, and bend it.
Useful tool.

Maybe I will try that... seems faster... sort of like the MB technique... with some degree of safety for us coffee drinkers... anyone know how to post a video on a forum that doesn't come from Youtube? Vitamin Klike a video that I shoot with my phone.

Vitamin K like a video that I shoot with my phone. Video's gotta be hosted someplace. You can always upload to Youtube from your phone (you can mark it as non-public so folks won't be able to find it outside of the forum) and then link it in here.

Hey Vitamin K, I can send you some bearings for an Unlimited if you want. If you can't get wheels from Zeebzob, I can probably send some I have as well.

Awfully kind of you to offer, but bearings cars really hold very little interest for me right now. Maybe the bug will bite me somewhere down the road, but, for now, that mystical prep process that makes the top oil cars so slick is where my fascination lies.

Just be careful. Oil is pretty much heroin. You're gonna be chasing the dragon. What I mean by that is is, as soon as you get close, some one will have made a break through discovery and now you NEED to use this new product or technique. It will either be something very secret and you will be chasing your tail trying to figure it out, or the shady vendor will repackage it and offer it at a hugely marked up price..along with a video, that will also be for sale. But wait, 2 months later the cycle will begin again. Meanwhile, I'll be running those top fuel dragsters on bearings in some of the fastest heats on the track, all the while having done nothing but clean the wheel tread from last months race.

Oh, I don't mind being a bit behind the curve. What really piques my interest is trying to nail down some solid principles of why oil works the way it does, as opposed to finding the ultimate prep combo (at this time). Question about the bearings though: When you need more speed for your bearings car...where do you find it? Like, everyone seems to be using the Zeeb-cut for wheels nowadays. The cars look like identical planks. There's not much in the way of aero innovations. Does it mostly come down to finding the best bearings and looking for that perfect tune?

Weight Placement? I still need to make a car that is 1.5" wide. I have not tried that yet. Not sure why you wouldn't want more junk in the trunk though.
