In this thread, I will document the building of "Kerfuffle Sauce". so... I picked up this scale model of a Duesenberg and the good people at the Franklin Mint have certainly outdone themselves on this baby.

From there... I take photos of the car straight on... with a quarter stuck to the car on the plane that I am focusing on. The quarter in the photos gives me a scale marker for that exact plane... in the photos...the further away from the quarter, the more distorted the information... So I bring the photos into AutoCAD and scale them so that they are the same size as a quarter (indicated with a read circle)

From there... I draw on the car to figure out the different parts and how thick each one should be.

This will be fun to watch evolve.

Sooo... I started drawing this thing up... and I was not happy with the results.
I believe that the fault lies in choosing a quarter as a scale marker...
The first time I used a dime...
Next time, I will use a thumb- tack.
So... I have reached a crossroads...
I am having computer problems at the moment (shocking)...
My nephew is due at end of week...
I need to import more photos to trace...
I stretched out the car and it looked better than before...
So many projects and so little time.
Maybe just a nice simple one for him to work on with me?
I am once again at a loss on how to approach his derby.

Ok... So here it is...
I have this Duesenberg car going... I am guessing for the adult race?
It may seem insulting if we win with the Duesenberg on the pack level?
Now... If I remember correctly.
The Cub Scout motto is to "do your best"
Soooo.... I am thinking about actually unleashing the "next big thing" on this pack.

You ask: WTF is "The Next Big Thing"?
Ask Microbrush.
He made the car part for me.. and it is light-years ahead. (not your typical one-trick pony)
On second thought..
MB is shy.
Just ask me.

HAHAHAH! I couldnt believe it myself, so I checked it on a couple of different scales.
Here is the general idea... Not strong enough to do the job on its own... but...
I figure that maybe I can thread the needle with the laser cutter to remove 3/16" wide of the front axle spar and replace it with drilled Basswood...
After I thin the car out, I will inset some strips of bamboo running basically stem to stern...
After a good wipe down with thin CA glue then I think it might be pretty good... slap a cover on her and get down to the business of screwing up the prep on the wheels!
The other idea for stiffening the body is a bit more complicated and I don't think that I want to go there just yet...
naturally, I also cut out a version in basswood... so I have that going for me.

"Thin to win" is a catchy phrase for the newly initiated...
but after holding a complete waif...
one realizes that the air likes a more Rubenesque figure... So the challenge becomes filling the space without adding to the weight.

I'm guessing you didn't cut this out by hand. Incredible.
But, as a pinewood car, I'm not seeing axle mounts. Or for that matter, a nose.

Well... Then I suppose that I should only show photos when it is finished? Sniff...
oh... I understand now... you cannot comprehend which way is up or down on this thing...
well... I uttered the words "next big thing" in a post a week ago and nobody asked one question about it... so I am afraid that ship has sailed...
betcha there will be another opportunity at some point.
