For those of you who cut your own wheels, what kind of lathe do you use? Would a mini lathe work for this purpose?
I’ve honestly never used a lathe before and don’t have much of an idea of where to start and what type of lathe would be suitable for this purpose.
I’ve had some luck improving wheels with my drill press, but there is a limit of what can be done on a drill press.
Any feedback appreciated.

Depends on what you want to do. If you want to true up most any lathe will do. If you want wheels like the top guys run you are going to need more expensive set up.
I know defer to the more experienced

Unless you are doing it purely for the challenge of doing it yourself, you can buy a lot of pro cut wheels for the investment in tooling you will need to make. My brother gave me a Sherline 3-axis mill a couple of years ago and it has turned into the most expensive gift I ever received. That being said, I really enjoy the challenge. If you want to, go for it. But it is very helpful if you have some kind of industrial processes background. It is not just a matter of having a lathe, you need to be able to intuitively understand fixturing a part, speeds and feeds, making custom tooling when you cant buy what you need for a certain job, those sorts of things. I’ve been working on cutting wheels for about a year now and am just getting to the point where I think I understand what I need to be doing and would actually run what I am making in competition. I suppose one of these days I should figure out how to make a video of my process to share here if there would be interest.

Interest in video - absolutely. I would enjoy seeing the process. I would likely not be much help on setup. But, I bet you would gain knowledge and information worth more than the time and effort it would take to post up.

I’d be interested to check out the process for sure, but I’m sure you are right that it’s probably just a better idea to invest in precut wheels.
