This came up in my Stitcher list this morning!!!
Great episode. Having your son on and hearing y'all interact with each other was great!!! Very well spoken for a 4th grader.
This might surprise you, but, I learned something that I am absolutely going to institute with my kids next year on their Awana cars. I think back to how many times they've helped me polish one axle and then go back in the house, and I stay out in the garage finishing up the next 3 axles for 45 minutes. I'm going to use your tip of "When the kid is done working, I'm done working."

Andre & Lance,
I enjoyed your 2nd podcast on cars not crossing the finish line!
Sometimes a reason a car will not cross the finish line.. could be the #1 problem with the stock axles them self them little burrs at the head of the axle that will bind into the hub.
I enjoy what you said about paint and glue's getting inside the wheel bores as well.
Had this very thing happen to me as a Scout leader and this is no joke! There was a kid that came into race at one of are Cub Scout Pinewood Derby's his car was not painted at the time.. he seen that the kid's that were checking there cars in front of him were all painted. So he takes off with his car and runs home and dips his car into a can of paint and comes back with the car still dripping of red paint. It was a sad day to say the least.. when I asked him why he did this and he told me that he thought the car had to be painted to race.
Thought id share this with you as it might make a good one for your next podcast on Pinewood Derby horror stories. However this one is true and it really happened!

There are some other reasons PWD car may not finish: Unpolished axles – some of those nails are really bad Poorly installed wheels – one or more fall off Designs that have too much wind resistance. I've seen some that literally could be a snail car design. Wheels rubbing block – (maybe canted but not clearanced on side of block) Get knocked out by another car. Broken/dropped
And, probably the biggest one – Not bringing the car up to 5oz.

most common issue I see with cars that don't finish is bad steering geometry.

most common issue I see with cars that don't finish is bad steering geometry. Must be pretty bad to keep it from finishing! Like extreme steering?

Things I've seen: (1) toed-in rear wheels, (2) rear wheels with positive camber driving wheels into the body, (3) two front wheels touching and both toed-in again and (4) right DFW steering in and right rear also steering in causing the car to cant and rub in opposite corners.
But, by far, the most common problem is the belly rubbing.

I saw a car go off the track due to negative cant on the front wheels... dunno which way it was steering.
